Young people in Greenwich are preparing for their summer exams through joining special Saturday revision centres to help them study.
Cllr Angela Cornforth, Greenwich Council Cabinet Member for Lifelong Learning and the Voluntary Sector, will join young people at 11am this Saturday (11 March) at Eltham Green City Learning Centre, Middle Park Avenue, to launch the first weekend of the Saturday revision centres, which will run until 27 May 2006.
Saturday revision centres will also be running at The John Roan School, Westcombe Park and Abbey Wood City Learning Centres. They provide a quiet environment where students can go and study without distractions. They also offer Internet access, with staff on hand to offer study support in the core subjects and revision tips.
Cllr Angela Cornforth commented:
“Students are encouraged to ‘revise thoroughly’ for their exams but sometimes don’t know where to start. However, with the right support and guidance, they will find revision can focus their minds and build their confidence.
“The revision centres offer a dedicated time and place where young people can embark on their revision with access to the latest support programmes and helpful staff.
“Over the past four years, Greenwich has improved faster than the national average rate at GCSE level. We are committed to ensuring this continues and that young people in Greenwich are able to leave school having achieved their full potential.”
Greenwich is the 9th most improved local authority in England over the period 2002 to 2005, with an increase of 11 percentage points in the number of students gaining five or more A*-C GCSEs, against a national increase of 4 percentage points during this period.
