Greenwich youngsters make their voice heard

20 March 2006

Articulate young orators in Greenwich took part in the second ‘Speak Out Speak Up’ borough wide competition for secondary schools at the University of Greenwich, Tuesday 14 March.

The yearly event, which included speakers from all secondary schools in Greenwich, was designed to increase the students’ capacity and confidence with verbal presentation skills.  It also aims to increase students’ future opportunities in interviews by teaching them how to market their own skills and qualities.

Last week’s competition was the culmination of weeks of practice and qualifying rounds.  The winner was Petrona Daley from Eltham Hill Technology College for Girls and the finalists were Obehi Orukpe from St Ursula’s School and Zoe Oputah from Blackheath Bluecoat School.

Cllr Angela Cornforth, Greenwich Council Cabinet Member for Lifelong Learning and the Voluntary Sector, said:

“The event showed student speakers at their best.  Congratulations to the winners and well done to everyone involved.”
