Greenwich residents cycle for charity

15 March 2006

With more than 150 Greenwich residents already getting on their bikes for charity next Sunday, the Council are reminding everyone that it’s not too late to sign up for the Mayor of Greenwich Charity Cycle Ride.

The 12-mile event is on Sunday, 26 March, beginning at Cutty Sark Gardens at 11am and finishing at Erith Pier.

The money will be raised for the Mayor’s Charities Motor Neurone Disease Association and Age Concern Greenwich.

Mayor of Greenwich, Councillor Dr Paul Tyler, said,

“The charity cycle ride gives the people of Greenwich a chance to raise money for a really good cause. More than 70 people took part in the cycle ride last year and we managed to make more than £1,000, and with over 150 people already confirmed to take part this year, I’m really excited about the money we’ll raise.”

Maureen Johnson, the main organiser of the bike ride added:

“It’s great to see so many people taking part in this event. We raised a lot more than I expected last year and it’s looking really good this time too. We’ve already had more than double the number of applicants than we did last time and I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone down at the starting line next week!”

The cycle ride is sponsored by Berkeley Homes (East Thames) Ltd, who opened the three-mile stretch of Thames footpath that runs past the Royal Arsenal development, as part of the Berkeley Homes regeneration of the entire site.

For those wishing to take part, the entry price is £5, but is free to those under the age of 12.

Sponsorship forms are available from Maureen Johnson on 0208 305 0343.

Completed forms should be returned by Monday 20 March, or failing that can be returned on the day.

Notes to editors:

Berkeley Homes (East Thames) Ltd has supported the Mayor's Bike ride by sponsoring the entry documentation and will be providing a watering and rest room facility at their Royal Arsenal development.

Royal Arsenal is London's largest regeneration project where Berkeley Homes is transforming the historic military factory and depot, founded in 1671 and ultimately covered 1,285 acres and stretched three miles along the Thames and one mile inland, into a riverside community of over 1,200 brand new and refurbished homes, comprising 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments, duplexes, penthouses and townhouses.
