Greenwich’s young writers have the chance to shine!

20 March 2006

Greenwich schools have the chance to give their budding young authors, thespians and poets an opportunity to showcase their skills by getting involved in the Greenwich Festival of Writing 2006.

The Greenwich Festival of Writing is now in its 6th year and aims to give young people in Greenwich, the chance to perform and express themselves through literature, language and associated art forms.

This year’s programme has its largest number of participants ever with ten Primary schools and seven Secondary schools across the borough now involved.

One of the most popular features of the programme is an exciting writing competition. Each year has a different theme and this year’s theme is about being part of a team, group or community in Greenwich. The best writers will have the chance to win a range of fabulous prizes such as a Home PC, a Mountain bike and an opportunity to have their work edited by a top author and published in the writing festival anthology.

Other features of the Festival include Author Day in which some of the leading children’s authors take part in the Festival. Names such as Malorie Blackman, Valerie Bloom and Paul Jennings have been involved over the past six years. There is also a Celebration Showcase day to commend all who have taken part in the event. The day also incorporates presentations from children’s works, plays written with and by children, poetry performances, storytelling, debates and various other performance pieces.

Councillor Vicky Morse, Cabinet member for Culture and Community services said, “The Greenwich Festival of Writing is an exciting programme, which is designed to give the young people of Greenwich who have a love for reading and writing, a chance to express themselves. There are a whole range of different activities to participate in and we would like to encourage all schools in our borough to get involved.”

Entries for the writing competition must be in by April 30 2006.
