Greenwich celebrates Fairtrade Borough status

2 March 2006

Greenwich has been awarded Fairtrade Borough status from the Fairtrade Foundation in recognition of its support towards Fairtrade principles and its role in promoting Fairtrade products throughout Greenwich.

To gain the status, the Council had to meet five overall goals to demonstrate its commitment.  These were:

- A Council resolution supporting Fairtrade, and an agreement to serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at meetings, in offices and in canteens.
- A range of Fairtrade products readily available in the area’s shops and served in local cafes/catering establishments.
- Use of Fairtrade products by a number of local work places and community organisations.
- Attract media coverage and support for the campaign.
- Establish a local Fairtrade steering group to ensure continued commitment to Fairtrade Town status.

Greenwich met or exceeded each of these goals.  Fairtrade products are now available in 26 retail and 22 catering outlets plus a range of local workplaces, community organisations and schools.  A directory has also been produced highlighting where Fairtrade products are available and a steering group set up to monitor and develop the Council’s Fairtrade development.

The news comes as Greenwich marks Fairtrade Fortnight (6 – 20 March) with a series of events.  Local councillors will join members of the Fairtrade Steering Group for the Fairtrade Fortnight in Greenwich launch at 9.30am on 6 March at Costa Coffee, 4 Powis Street, Woolwich.

Cllr John Fahy, who has played a leading role in Greenwich’s Fairtrade campaign, said:

“By gaining Fairtrade Status, Greenwich has proved its commitment towards securing a better deal for producers and growers in the third world.  The Fairtrade campaign helps tens of thousands of people in the developing world build a better life for themselves and their wider communities.

“I would encourage everyone who lives and works in Greenwich to support Fairtrade by either buying Fairtrade products or asking local retailers and employers
to stock Fairtrade.  There is a growing range of produce available so support Fairtrade now!”
