Greenwich’s kids looking after the Green

13 March 2006

Some of the borough’s best budding young artists were awarded for their artwork, as part of a poster competition to raise awareness about the environment, at a special reception held at the Town Hall on Thursday.

The Energy Efficiency and Global Warming Poster Competition, led by Greenwich Council, is a campaign for 5-11 year-olds that aims to improve people’s understanding of the issues surrounding climate change.

Young people across the borough were asked to come up with new ways of raising people’s awareness about looking after the environment, and the winners were chosen for originality and how effectively they got this message across.

Prizes for the competition included a remote control car that runs on solar energy, a water powered calculator, a solar powered torch and £10 gift vouchers for Argos. All competition entries received a certificate.

Winners were chosen by, Mayor of Greenwich, Councillor Dr Paul Tyler and Councillor Alex Grant, Cabinet Member for Environment and Public Services.

Councillor Grant said,

“To effectively tackle climate change and the issues surrounding global warming we need first to educate people, and competitions like these are one way to do this. This is because they encourage our young people to care for the environment in a way that is fun and enjoyable for them, and this is the best way to deliver the important messages that we want to get across.”

“It was really difficult to chose a winner out of so many great entries, and I’m very pleased that so many young people took part in this competition.”
