Cardwell steps back in time to celebrate

20 March 2006

Glitter balls and big hair were the order of the day at Cardwell Primary School last Friday (17 March) when it celebrated its 30th birthday by turning the clock back to the mid-70s.

Children at the school, in Frances St, Woolwich, went online to research seventies culture and dress up for the occasion.  They also choreographed dance sequences to perform at a special assembly on the day.

Headteacher Carole Smith, sporting her “Agnetha from Abba” look for the day, said: “Our pupils and their parents have been so supportive over the preparations, and it has been a chance for everyone to celebrate and be really creative.”

Cardwell Primary School was officially opened on March 17 1976 to meet the needs of local families in both the Dockyard and Red Barracks estates.

Headteacher Carole Smith and Deputy Headteacher Mel Anderman both received accolades in last year’s national Teaching Awards, which are a celebration of excellence and good practice in education.

The day was supported by Charlton Athletic’s community scheme and Asda supermarket in Bugsbys Way, Charlton who donated raffle prizes.  Proceeds from the raffle will go the Demelza children’s hospice in Kent.
