Healthy Planet, Healthy People

Changes in Common is urging local residents to “celebrate the planet” at its annual street party on Sunday June 11.

The street party is part of London Sustainability Weeks 2006, with an environmental and healthy living theme.

The street party is a community engagement event and Changes in Common will encourage more residents to become involved in their programmes and have a bigger say in the future of their neighbourhood.

This is the third year the street party has been held and organisers hope to top last year’s big turn out.

Activities will feature:

· children’s workshop from 10.30am;
· children’s parade begins 1.15pm;
· live bands, DJ and Irish dancers;
· Sikh martial arts display and tae kwon do demonstration;
· free fruit, free fun and free eco stuff;
· try aerobics, t’ai chi and yoga, or chess;
· head massage and henna painting;
· under fives corner;
· learn watercolours, make origami;
· green trail, stalls, info and more;
· Pearly King and Queen Finale.

Local arts group Taru Brazil is masterminding the children’s parade, following a series of workshops at local primary schools making costumes and instruments from recycled materials and learning music and dance.

On the day of the party, Taru Brazil and community artist Roger Mortimer will hold a final workshop to make parade monsters and to hold a dress rehearsal before the children begin their parade around the neighbourhood.

On their return to Herbert Road, the children will give a brief performance for residents.

Changes in Common has devised a Green Trail in Herbert Road for children to learn more about environmental issues.

The special Children’s Corner for Under Fives is part of National Sure Start Month (June) and will have a wealth of information for parents.

Local resident groups, Greenwich Council, Greenwich Leisure Limited, Greenwich Community College, Job Centre Plus, the PCT, Drums for Schools, Thames Water and British Gas have all worked together to run stalls and provide activities.

The main activities run from about 1pm to 5pm.
