Crown Woods School flying high

29 June 2006

Crown Wood Secondary School celebrated the award of specialist school status in Humanities with a huge day of celebration on Friday.

Crown Woods received the award from the Department for Education and Skills in recognition of their fantastic work in this area. The award means that Crown Woods now receives extra funding towards their Humanities departments, specialising in English, History and Geography.

Crown Woods Head Teacher, Mike Murphy, kicked off the day with an opening speech to a crowd that included the Mayor of Greenwich, Councillor Harpinder Singh, before a launch of balloons from students signified the start of a day of festivities. The day included stories and poems being read out by students, interactive humanities lessons for the whole day, food from all over the world served at lunchtime and a special Trade Fair.

The extra funding from the award will have a massive impact on current and future students, as Crown Woods have already been able to fund a number of new improvements to help create high quality, innovative teaching and learning.

The projects include specialised literacy classes in small groups, ICT access for all students, the creation of a school magazine and extra enrichment classes so most students get individual teaching and guidance. Crown Woods have also begun to build links with major businesses including Microsoft.

The Mayor of Greenwich Councillor Harpinder Singh, said, “We are delighted with the achievements of Crown Woods and the reward they have received for their efforts. The extra funding has already contributed greatly to the quality of schooling the pupils are receiving and more improvements are in the pipeline. Specialist school status will ensure that Crown Woods pupils will reap the benefits for years to come.”
