Students at Charlton School, Charlton Park Road, are set to benefit from a new extension to the school as part of a drive to improve facilities and enable all the students to learn together on one site.
Currently, students at Charlton School are split between one site at Charlton Park Road and a second site at Royal Hill in Greenwich. As well as enabling students to learn on one site, the scheme will also allow Charlton School to create a Centre of Excellence for secondary aged students with a wide range of special educational needs.
The scheme will provide a new building at the Charlton Park Road site, refurbishment of the electrical and mechanical services and the creation of a new external play area.
Cllr Angela Cornforth, Greenwich Council Cabinet Member for Lifelong Learning and the Voluntary Sector, said:
“This is very good news for Charlton School and will enable staff to build on the excellent work they already carry out. High quality buildings and facilities are vitally important in helping maintain good standards in schools. This forms part of the Council’s commitment to providing high quality education for children with special educational needs.”
The work will be phased to ensure that the school continues to operate without disruption during the period of the works. The works are being funded from the Council’s capital programme and the DfES Building Schools for the Future programme.
Charlton School provides education for students with special educational needs such as severe learning difficulties, complex needs and autistic spectrum disorder.
This scheme forms part of the Council’s wider Schools Re-organisation Programme, which included proposals to create two Centres of Excellence (for the primary and secondary age ranges respectively) for children with complex special needs
