Audit and Inspection letter

The Audit Commission's Annual Audit Letter helps the public see the Council's stewardship of public funds.

A recent legislative change has introduced new requirements about publicity for the Letter and its accessibility to the public.

The Council is now required:

  • as soon as reasonably practicable following its receipt to publish the Annual Audit Letter
  • to keep copies of the Letter available for purchase by any person on payment of a reasonable sum.

What is the Audit Letter?

The Audit Commission's annual Audit Letter to Councillors is an independent scrutiny of Council practices, procedures and systems.

While predominantly concerned with financial performance, procedures and probity, a significant amount of performance management work is carried out by the Commission.

This includes a programme of work designed to help the Audit Commission deliver its Comprehensive Performance Assessment judgement for the Council.

This work will suggest areas where improvements might be made. In general, these have been accepted and officers have agreed action plans for their implementation.
