Transport access and safer environment

Greenwich has worked towards an integrated transport system that is:

  • accessible and affordable
  • relative, modern, efficient and of high quality
  • meets the needs of people and businesses
  • is integrated with the London-wide and national networks
  • promotes accessibility to services and facilities, rather than just mobility
  • is safe, well maintained and managed
  • is an integral part of the public realm.

Conferences

Greenwich holds annual transportation conferences with interested individuals, community and pressure groups to inform on the development of transport strategies.

Actions have included:

  • improving bus routes and interchanges
  • securing record amounts of additional transport infrastructure - DLR, Crossrail, Greenwich Waterfront Transit and Thames Gateway Bridge
  • securing over £5m from TfL for road improvement and safety schemes
  • promoting green travel plans and alternative travel modes
  • using planning powers to manage the intensity and density of developments alongside access to public transport
  • establishing road safety initiatives and home zones reducing traffic speeds
  • achieving the government’s target for school travel plans
  • recognising gaps in information
  • developing an accessible transport guide for people with learning disabilities.

Safer and accessible Greenwich

Following the relaxation of licensing laws, the Council and police launched Operation Grape - a joint initiative that introduced licensing patrols around local pubs and clubs.

During the first two months of the operation, Greenwich saw a fall in reported rates of violent crime and street crime.
