Greenwich Town Centre consultation

The consultation on plans to improve Greenwich town centre has now closed.

An extended deadline until 1 August, 2010 has now expired.

We will now consider your views on two schemes to improve the area for residents, businesses and visitors:

  • landscaping improvements in Cutty Sark Gardens
  • new traffic arrangements with part of the town centre becoming pedestrianised.

Cutty Sark Gardens

Cutty Sark Gardens serves as the gateway for millions of visitors each year to the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site.

We asked for your views on plans that will help ensure that Cutty Sark Gardens is a fitting space to welcome increased visitor numbers attracted by Greenwich's unique heritage.

Plans include:

  • better landscaping
  • improved lighting and planting.
The aim is to create a more welcoming feel to this much-visited riverside open space. We also aim to open up the space for more community events and performances.

Pedestrianising Greenwich town centre

Following a consultation in December 2009 on plans to close part of Greenwich Town Centre to traffic, the Council produced detailed plans which aim to reflect suggestions made by local people.

The Council believes the scheme will address the needs of local residents and visitors whether on foot, on bicycle, or on public transport. At the same time, the scheme should ensure a good traffic flow and reduce congestion.

Your views are vital

Council leader, Chris Roberts said: "As a World Heritage Site, Maritime Greenwich receives around 9 million visitors a year and we need to ensure the town is a fitting place for the increased numbers of people we are expecting in the run up to, and during, the 2012 Games.

"The views of local people are vital in helping us determine the priorities for improvement."
