You may be entitled to a discount on your Council Tax bill.

For example, if you are the only person over the age of 18 who lives at your home, you will be entitled to a discount of at least 25%.

If your home is empty and unfurnished, you may be entitled to a discount of 50%. If it remains furnished and is not your sole or main residence, you may be entitled to a discount of 10%.

You may also be entitled to a discount if all other residents in your home are disregarded for Council Tax because they fall into one of the following groups:

  • Full-time students, student nurses, apprentices and Youth Training trainees
  • Patients resident in hospital
  • People being looked after in Care Homes
  • People who are severely mentally impaired
  • People staying in certain hostels or night shelters
  • 18 and 19 year olds who are at, or have just left, school
  • Care workers working for low pay, usually for charities
  • People caring for someone with a disability who is not a spouse, partner or child under 18
  • Members of visiting forces and certain international institutions
  • Members of religious communities (monks and nuns)
  • People in prison (except those in prison for nonpayment of Council Tax or a fine)
  • Diplomats and their non-British spouses
  • Non-British spouses of students
  • Foreign language assistants
