What will happen next?

When the Council has obtained the Liability Order a notice will be sent advising you of how much the liability is for, unless you have already made an arrangement to pay.

The notice will require you by law to provide details of your work or benefit details and return these to the Council Tax office. If you don’t give the Council these details you could be convicted of an offence and fined.

If the Council cannot collect the debt by deductions from your pay or income support and no arrangement has been made, the Council will refer the matter to its bailiffs.

If the bailiffs cannot collect the amount that you owe, the debt will be passed back to the Council when we can ask the court to commit you to prison for up to three months for not paying your Council Tax.

It is in your interest to contact the Council Tax Section without delay before this matter proceeds further.
