How review topics are selected and conducted

Our Overview and Scrutiny Committee and Scrutiny Panels aim to review topics that will help the Council set priorities for community wellbeing and service improvement.

There are a number of criteria which are used when deciding whether a proposal for a review topic should go ahead.

The criteria include:

  • high level of public concern with an issue, or dissatisfaction with a service
  • high Council priority
  • identifiable poor service performance
  • significant impact on the public
  • high national priority, including impending legislation
A review proposal might be rejected if there is already work underway in another area of the Council on that proposal, or if the proposed subject for review didn't have implications for a significant element of our local community.

How are reviews selected and conducted?

Topics for reviews are proposed by Councillors, or suggested by local people and organisations. If the Council agrees to the topics, they are included in the annual work programme for the Overview and Scrutiny Committee and Panels.

You can read more about the ways that our reviews are selected and conducted here.

How can I get involved?

Please see our Getting Involved webpage for more information on suggesting and participating in reviews.
