Submitting a petition
Any Councillor can present a petition to the Council on your behalf. If you have a petition and would like it to be presented to the Council, please contact your local
ward Councillor
.
You will need to state clearly in your petition:
the aim and reasons of the petition
what action you would like the Council to take.
Please mark clearly the full contact details (including home address and telephone number) of the lead petitioner on the first page of your petition, or on a covering letter.
Points to note
For a petition to be valid, there must be at least three petitioners – who are not members of the same family – signing it.
The request in your petition must not be of a personal nature.
What happens next
Your Councillor will present the petition to the Council at the next available meeting. You will not be able to speak at this point.
The Council will refer your petition to the relevant Chief Officer for investigation. He or she will then report on the outcome of their investigation to the Cabinet Committee. You will be invited to this Cabinet Committee meeting, and you will be able to speak at it.
The Cabinet Committee's decision regarding your petition is reported back to the Full Council, within three normal meetings of its first presentation. Again, you will be invited to the meeting and you can speak at this meeting.
