Scheme for volunteers at major events
Volunteers can build their skills and CVs while helping out at world-class events under a brand new scheme launched this month at The O2.
The Major Events Volunteering Programme (MEVP) has been established as a joint initiative between:
Greenwich Local Labour and Business (GLLaB)
- the local labour scheme set up by Greenwich Council
AEG Europe
- the company who manage and operate The O2
Volunteer Centre Greenwich.
Applicants will form part of a pool of trained volunteers who will help at various events to be held at The O2. These will include the second Run to the Beat half-marathon in September and the World Gymnastics Championships in October. There will also be a rolling programme of volunteer opportunities at the British Music Experience, The O2’s cutting edge interactive music exhibition.
Building skills and confidence
Deputy Council Leader, Peter Brooks, who opened last week’s launch event, said: "In today’s difficult economic times it’s all the more important that we do everything we can to help people develop their skills.
"A programme like this will give people the abilities and the confidence to get back into full time employment, as well as the necessary experience, qualifications and up-to-date references."
'Valuable experience'
The programme’s manager Ann Lacey, who has 18 years’ experience of working with volunteers across the borough, said: "We’re looking for people who are willing to help. A lot of their time will be focused on assisting customers. We aim to make sure that volunteers have an enjoyable time, as well as gaining experience towards future employment."
Ann will be working closely with Steve Brice, Business Operations Director at The O2, who will draw on his own volunteering experiences at an earlier stage in his career.
To help change to a career in sport and leisure, Steve volunteered in his local leisure centre. He told invited guests at last week’s launch: "I am really proud that I started as a volunteer and gave up my time to gain valuable experience. I believe we will see lots of stars emerging from this programme who have great skills."
