New recruits make a clean sweep

14 September 2009

The first recruits appointed during a recent employment drive have begun their new jobs.

New recruits

A total of 250 local people, from all areas of the borough, have been taken on to work with Cleansweep helping keep Greenwich’s estates and public spaces clean.

Many of the new staff come from areas where employment rates have been hit hardest by the recession, such as estates like the Oaks, Glyndon and Woolwich Common.

They will work for up to 12 months, taking on roles that include environment workers with Cleansweep, supervisor posts and neighbourhood wardens.

They will work in teams, with some focusing on town centres, some on housing estates, and further teams tackling litter in residential streets.

Improving the local environment

Deputy Council Leader, Peter Brooks met the first team of recruits last  Friday as they completed their week-long induction at the Greenwich Work and Learn Centre.

He said: "It was great meeting these new staff, who are clearly very enthusiastic about having the chance to make a difference to their local environment.

"This scheme really is a 'win-win' for everyone – as well as giving much-needed work to 250 unemployed local people during a difficult recession, it’s also adding extra resources in the Council’s battle against flytipping, litter and other environmental problems that local people quite rightly see as a concern."

The new staff were recruited at a series of Open Days hosted over the summer by the Council and Greenwich Local Labour and Business (GLLaB) – the agency set up by Greenwich Council and other agencies to support local people into work and training.
