Woolwich DLR on the right track

Woolwich is now one step closer to getting aboard the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in early 2009.
A 400-tonne tunnel-boring machine, nicknamed Carla, has cut through to Parry Place and created the first track of the 2.5km rail-link between King George V DLR station and Woolwich Arsenal.

On Wednesday 17 January the machine was returning to North Woolwich on a fleet of lorries. It will then be rebuilt and thoroughly overhauled by construction company AMEC. This will get it ready to begin cutting the second track needed across the Thames.

Road closures

Parry Place will continue to be closed until the removal of Carla is complete.

Burrage Road is due to re-open to two-way traffic in early February.

Significant stage

Cllr Peter Brooks, Deputy Leader of Greenwich Council, said:

"The arrival of Carla, signifying the end of the first stage of this £180 million project, is a significant milestone in the history of Woolwich.

"It will give us a speedy, reliable link with the rest of the DLR network to Canary Wharf and the City, as well as into Lewisham. Greenwich Council is confident that the business community and all the residents of this borough will see their lives transformed when the Docklands Light Railway arrives here in just over two years’ time."

Information helpline

AMEC will continue its regular meetings with both Woolwich town centre businesses and with tenants’ and residents’ groups.

If you want further information on the DLR development, a 24-hour helpline is available on 0845 847 6180.
