Recycle your old car

Car owners can dispose of their old vehicles free of charge, under government regulations that came into effect on 1 January 2007.

Free take-back

Vehicle manufacturers are responsible for the 'free take-back' of old vehicles.

They have set up facilities – known as authorised treatment facilities or ATFs – to scrap old cars when the cars reach the end of their life.

Owners can deliver their old cars to any of these treatment facilities or make an arrangement for the vehicle to be collected for a nominal fee.

Higher recycling levels

The system should lead to a reduction in abandonment as well as contribute to higher overall levels of recycling.

Up to 80% of a vehicle's weight is re-used or recycled.
