Night-time works affecting Blackwall Tunnel

29 January 2010

Transport for London has closed the Blackwall Tunnel to southbound traffic on weekday nights and some weekends. Motorists can still travel northbound but will be diverted via the southbound tunnel.

The closures will enable refurbishment works carried out by Transport for London to make the 112-year-old tunnel safer. The works are expected to take up to three years.

Closure details

The tunnel is closed weekday nights and some weekends. This is in addition to the current Sunday morning closures.

During the overnight works, the southbound tunnel will operate in the northbound direction.

Weekday nights

The tunnel will be closed to southbound traffic on:

  • Sunday nights 9pm to 5am
  • Monday nights 9pm to 5am
  • Tuesday nights 9pm to 5am
  • Wednesday nights 9pm to 5am
  • Thursday nights 9pm to 5am.

Weekends

There will also be some weekend closures from Friday 9pm to Monday 5am for extended shifts to carry out works that need longer than the overnight closures.

Sunday mornings

The current Sunday morning closure between 1am and 8am will continue during routine maintenance of both the northbound and southbound tunnels.

Bus route affected

During the weekday closures, the 108 bus route will be split into two sections between 9pm and 1am:

  • Lewisham to North Greenwich
  • Stratford to Canning Town
Passengers will need to change onto the Jubilee Line to link both services.

After 1am, the bus will be able to travel in both directions through the tunnel, escorted by police. The frequency of the service after 1am is one every half-hour.

Travelling to The O2

If you are travelling via the tunnel to The O2, you will need to pass through before 9pm.

Returning event-goers will be able to travel northbound through both lanes of the southbound tunnel. However, those wishing to use the A13 will be diverted.
