Improving the transport network

 
North Greenwich train station

Public transport in southeast London is in the process of being revolutionised and Greenwich is now an area of unique accessibility due to the following:
  • North Greenwich station
  • Jubilee Line extension
  • Docklands Light Railway (DLR), including an extension to Woolwich
  • new piers
  • South Thames development route
  • traffic management
  • over eight miles of new or improved riverside walk.

Woolwich Arsenal DLR success

The DLR link to Woolwich Arsenal has proven a success.

  • Over 15,000 passengers use the station every weekday.

  • The line is on track to carry over 5 million users in its first 12 months - 5 per cent above projections.

  • Since its launch in January 2009, Woolwich Arsenal station has become the seventh busiest station on the DLR network.

Further developments

Some further improvements are being made and the Council continues to work with Transport for London (TfL) to introduce better transport networks to the borough.

Crossrail

Crossrail is the new high frequency, convenient and accessible railway for London and the south east. From 2017, Crossrail will travel from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east via new twin tunnels under central London. It will link Heathrow Airport, the West End, the City of London and Canary Wharf.

Work on Crossrail is expected to begin in the borough of Greenwich around the middle of 2011. Tunnelling between Plumstead and North Woolwich should start in the middle of 2012.

Lewisham DLR upgrade

DLR upgrade to Lewisham will increase passenger capacity by the year 2009.  For more information on the DLR development, call the dedicated 24-hour helpline on 0845 847 6180.

Greenwich Waterfront Transit - update

At Transport for London's March 2009 Board meeting, it announced that funding for Phase 1 of the Greenwich Waterfront Transit was being allocated to other projects and the scheme would not go ahead.

The Council is currently working with TfL to try and establish how TfL intends to meet the need for the fast reliable public transport system that the Greenwich Waterfront Transit would have provided between Abbey Wood, Thamesmead and Woolwich.

Thames Gateway Bridge - withdrawn

Funding for the proposed Thames Gateway Bridge was withdrawn by the Mayor of London in November 2008.

Transport for London is currently producing a feasibility study into a range of crossing options for the Thames between Tower Bridge and the Dartford Crossing. The outcome of the study is expected later in 2009.
