Public consultation

Your views on any new traffic measures are important to us. As a result we consult extensively on traffic schemes before deciding on the way forward.

Consultation process

Informal process

With most proposals we send out a letter and a questionnaire, or an explanatory leaflet, to addresses within the immediate areas. All of our correspondence to you will include a named officer contact and telephone number. You should retain these in the event you need to contact us for any reason.

For major schemes the consultations are expanded to include a public meeting or exhibition.

Formal process

In many cases, a traffic management order is necessary and this requires the publication of a formal notice in the local papers. Notices may also be posted in affected streets. This will give people a further opportunity to submit written objections.

Online feedback

Traffic consultation schemes will be published on this website and residents will be able to respond using a direct email address.

What happens with the responses?

Once we have completed both the informal and formal consultations we consider all the responses and what changes, if any, need to be made to the scheme design. For some schemes, we may need to report to a relevant Council committee where elected members decide if the scheme should go ahead. Members of the public are allowed to address the committee.

Starting work

When it has been decided that the scheme should proceed, residents will be informed and also notified when work is due to start on site. The completion of the various legal stages we need to go through to make the traffic order, letting a works contract and programming the work with the contractor may mean it is many months between the decision to proceed and starting work.
