The Council uses various measures to assist disabled people in the borough cross our roads safely. You can find these listed below.
Tactile paving
Tactile paving is now used at all new zebra and pelican crossings, and some ramped crossing points, to help those with impaired vision. This paving has small raised knobs that can be felt and is used to indicate the start of the crossing point, to direct people to the demand button at signals and to indicate the right direction to cross.
Audible signals
Many pelican crossings have audible signals, as well as the green man signal, to indicate when it is safe to cross the road.
Tactile knob
Some two stage pelican crossings and some junction signals are fitted with a tactile knob on the pedestrian push buttons, rather than an audible signal. This is so that visually impaired people can tell which part of the staggered crossing or junction is safe to cross.
