Highway records
The Council keeps records of:
street adoptions
stopping up orders
diversion orders
modification orders
reclassification orders.
Why we need them?
These records are used to provide information to various sections and departments of the Council and outside bodies, including replies to Local Land Charges, solicitors enquiries and letters from the public.
Information held
The reports consist of a register incorporating road classification numbers if applicable, ward location, house numbers and whether such matters are maintainable at the public expense. In conjunction with this record 1:1250 Ordnance Survey sheets are kept to provide a visual image of the adopted/unadopted streets in the borough.
Public access
As a member of the public, you can inspect these records during normal office hours.
Highways over private land
The land over which a highway passes may be privately owned, but the Highway Authority has overriding duties, powers and responsibilities. Responsibility for the land over which a highway passes will only revert to the owner if the highway is "stopped up" by means of a Highway Order.
