Parking dos and don'ts

Parking rules can be confusing, so here are the basics. If you can’t remember all the ins and outs, don’t worry, the most important rule is simple: read the signs.

‘No Stopping’ areas

‘No Stopping’ means exactly that, even to set down or pick up passengers or unload your vehicle. This applies on all ‘School Keep Clear' markings as well as bus stops or clearways defined with yellow markings and roads marked with red lines on Red Routes.

Permit bays

Signs nearby will specify which permit holders can park here for free and when. Parking here without the right permit within the times specified will get you a ticket. This applies to Blue Badge holders too.

Pavement parking

Parking on pavements, ‘footways’ and grass verges is illegal on most streets in the borough, even if only one wheel is on the kerb. The exception is where there is a blue sign with a ‘P’ showing a car parked on the pavement.

Yellow lines

Yellow lines tell you where you must not park and yellow vertical stripes on the kerb indicate where you must not load or unload (the two are often used together). Double yellow lines and double stripes apply at all times, while single lines and single stripes apply during the times stated on nearby signs.

However, if you are in a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) and the operating times for yellow lines and stripes are the same as those stated on the CPZ boundary signs then there will be no sign nearby.

Blue badge exceptions

Blue Badge holders can park for up to three hours on any single or double yellow line if there is no loading and unloading ban or stopping restriction. They may also park free of charge, and without a time limit, in any other ‘parking place', paid-for parking bay or limited period waiting box.
