Cycle training

We aim to make cycling safer by offering Bikeability courses. Bikeability is a cycle proficiency scheme designed to give cyclists the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today's roads.

The cycle training team

We now have 15 professionally qualified and nationally accredited cycling teachers and soon the cycle training team will be receiving a van.

The van will be a mobile cycle training centre and will carry 30 pool bikes to venues in the borough, bringing safer cycling tuition to more children and adults.

Training in schools

We provide cycling tuition in conjunction with the borough’s schools during term time and school holidays.

  • The courses aim to teach children how to cycle safely at all times, and especially when out on the road in traffic. They follow national standards guidelines as developed by the Cycle Touring Club.
  • Safety helmets and high visibility tabards are worn at all times.
  • The training incorporates bike skills, road craft, the Highway Code and awareness of other road users.
  • This training is generally for years five and six pupils, although we also teach secondary school pupils.
  • Students are provided with the opportunity to attain levels one, two and three of the new national Bikeability Award scheme. They are awarded certificates as they reach each level.
  • Training goes ahead in most weather conditions so students gain experience in a variety of conditions.
