Supplementary Planning Documents

Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs) are non-statutory documents that supplement policies in the Unitary Development Plan (UDP).

Examples of SPDs are:

  • area development frameworks
  • site development briefs
  • policy advice notes
  • master plans.
SPDs do not form part of the UDP. They are issued separately from it. However, they are a major consideration in planning applications.

These documents used to be called SPG

Prior to the 2004 Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act, this type of document was called Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG).

There is one difference between the two types of document. SPG is not accompanied by a sustainability appraisal, whereas SPDs are.

Schedule of SDPs and other planning information documents

The Council also produces planning information documents, including simpler or more general development briefs or frameworks.

These are similar to SPDs/SPG, but have a lesser status as background documents to the UDP.

You can read a schedule of all existing SPDs, and SPG and other briefs here.

Please note that any documents labelled Draft do not have SPG or SPD status yet.
