Gender Equality Scheme

Our Gender Equality Scheme sets out the ways that we will put the new legal Gender Equality Duty into practice over the next three years.

The aim of the duty is to make sure that men and women living or working in Greenwich are treated
fairly and have equal opportunities.

We will achieve this by making gender considerations central to the way we plan, commission and deliver our services, and in the way we recruit and support staff. We will take specific, targeted action to address barriers faced by particular genders to promote fairness between men and women.

What is the Gender Equality Duty?

The Gender Equality Duty builds on existing legal duties under the Sex Discrimination Act. The key difference is that in addition to individuals having the right to complain if they have been discriminated against because of their gender, the law will also require public authorities to have a proactive approach to promoting equality between men and women.

This makes the law on gender equality similar to the provisions in respect of race and disability.
