A strategy for tackling drugs misuse

In 1998, the government introduced a ten-year drug strategy called Tackling Drugs to Build a Better Britain. The strategy aimed to tackle misuse of drugs in the UK. An updated Drug Strategy was published in December 2002.

The Greenwich Drug and Alcohol Action Team is responsible for the local implementation of this strategy.

The four aims of the strategy are:

  • reducing the supply of illegal drugs
  • preventing young people from becoming drug misusers
  • reducing drug-related crime
  • reducing the use of drugs through increased participation in treatment programmes.

Tackling Drugs Changing Lives

In 2004, the Government published Tackling Drugs Changing Lives, which set out progress on the Drug Strategy and planned action. See Useful Links on the right for more.

National Crack Plan

The Government has also published Tackling Crack Cocaine – A National Plan. This has important links with the Drug Interventions Programme, treatment, education and prevention policy and supply side activity.

Young people's substance misuse strategy

The Home Office has been working closely with the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Department of Health on a new cross-government approach to young people and drugs which began implementation in April 2005. See Useful Links on the right for more.

Drug Interventions Programme

The Drug Interventions Programme (DIP) aims to help drug-misusing offenders into treatment and away from drug use and crime. See Useful Links on the right for more.
