Council Tax level set
Greenwich councillors approved a £1million investment to establish a specialist police unit dedicated to tackling young crime in the borough this week.
The decision was taken at the Full Council meeting which saw this year's Council Tax increase set at 1.97 per cent. This equates to just 36p a week for an average Band D property. The Mayor of London levies the remainder.
Other priority investments will see £750,000 for the Cleansweep service to address hot spots, 7-day working, leaf cleaning and weed spraying and further improvements to the recycling service.
Lower increase than London average
Since 1999/2000 the cumulative increase in Greenwich's Council Tax has been the second lowest in London. It is expected that this year's increase will be lower than the London average – as it has been for the last nine consecutive years.
Earlier this month, the Government's independent watchdog, the Audit Commission, recognised Greenwich as providing value for money, and highly praised the Council for its stewardship of public finances.
Greenwich received the maximum score for the use of resources assessment, which looks at how well the Council manages its finances.

Finance and investment
Cllr Chris Roberts, Leader of Greenwich Council, said: "We have an ongoing commitment to financial prudence and robust management of public finances and resources. This has enabled us to provide good value for money and pass on these benefits to our residents through consistently lower than London-average Council Tax increases over the last decade.
"We are continuing to invest record levels in areas of priority, focusing on improving our exam results, providing decent homes, reducing crime and fear of crime through establishing a specialist police unit, providing excellent libraries and leisure facilities and ensuring our streets are cleaner."
