Greenwich has been recognised for delivering excellent services and received a certificate for the most improved performance in street lighting at the the Association for Public Services Excellence Awards.
Greenwich was among hundreds of councils across the UK who were highlighted in the awards.
We were recognised for improvements in maintenance, savings and efficiencies over the last year.
These efficiencies include:
- maintenance of around 21,000 lamp columns on public highways and housing estates - each year engineers change a third of the bulbs while 250 columns are replaced due to wear and tear
- maintainance of illuminated bollards and pedestrian refuge lighting
- installation of new energy efficient LED lights at school crossing patrol signs over the last two years.
Further energy savings were made with the use of LED lights for Christmas decorations in Woolwich and Greenwich town centres.
The Council has also made use of new computerised ordering systems, which provide materials and products more efficiently.
Delivering benefits
Deputy Council Leader, Councillor Peter Brooks, said:
"We are delighted to receive an award for providing excellence in a vital public service that often goes unrecognised. It is a fitting tribute to the borough and its committed team of frontline staff who are delivering real benefits to the people of Greenwich."
