Have you had your gas appliances checked for safety recently?
Whatever kind of property you live in - house, flat, council, private, owner-occupier - it’s vital to have your appliances regularly checked.
Why are gas appliance checks important?
Badly-fitted or badly-maintained gas appliances can release carbon monoxide into the atmosphere. Most of us know that carbon monoxide can kill.
National figures show that last year eight people died in their own homes from carbon monoxide poisoning, while many others will suffer either temporary or permanent brain-damage.
If your home and your appliances are checked regularly, problems can be spotted and quickly repaired.
Inspections for Council tenants
We take gas inspections on our housing stock very seriously. If you get notification that an inspector will be calling round, it’s important to let them in.
Make sure the official has all the correct ID first -talk through the letterbox and get a telephone number off them to ring their office and check if you’re not sure.
The inspectors will be looking out for a badly-fitted or badly-maintained gas appliances, as well as blocked flues and cracked or damaged gas-pipes.
Safety for your family and nieghbours
Councillor Maureen O’Mara, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, said: "Many gas-safety inspections on Council properties will be taking place over the next few weeks. It’s vitally important that, if you’re on the list, you let them in - or make an arrangement to allow them access.
"An inspection needn’t take long, and it must be done, not just for the safety of you and your family, but for that of your neighbours too."
