New homes on the Barnfield Estate

Two new five-bedroom homes have been created on the Barnfield Estate to help meet high demands for family accommodation in the borough.
Using more than £100,000 of Council money and an extra £100,000 won from the GLA, we have converted some disused nursery offices into flats, specifically designed to alleviate overcrowding.

Both of the flats have two WCs, separate bathrooms and a shower room, a kitchen and large lounges.

They are now being occupied by families who were in desperate need of the extended accommodation.

Conversion programme

The money also paid for another disused space on the estate to be converted into a two-bedroom flat, which has been fully refurbished to decent homes standard. This is part of a bigger programme to convert or extend about 30 homes across the borough.

The conversion work was carried out by the Council’s contractor, Apollo London Limited. Work was completed at the end of last year and the new tenants moved in last month.

Increasing housing for larger families

Cllr Maureen O’Mara, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, said: "It’s rare that we have the chance to add to our housing stock, but it’s a real achievement to be able to provide such sought after – and difficult to find – accommodation.

"This time last year there were only 69 properties in the whole borough with five bedrooms or more, so by investing in this work we’ve significantly increased our capacity to house larger families."
