Heritage Centre commended by national body

The Greenwich Heritage Centre, based in Woolwich Arsenal, has been commended for the quality of its archive services by a national body.
The National Archives ranked the Heritage Centre at a 2 star rating (out of 3) for the 2007 period, an improvement on the 1 star the centre received in 2006. The result means that the Heritage Centre is ranked amongst the top six venues in London for archive services.

The scheme, a self assessment programme which measures the performance of local authority archive services, was launched in 2006 by the National Archives. Although it is voluntary, the National Archives expects local authority archives which are places for deposit for public records, or which have subscribed to the Standard for Record Repositories, to make returns.

By being a part of the scheme, the authorities can judge the adequacy of their archive service and compare themselves against each other.

An asset to the borough

Councillor John Fahy, Cabinet member for Culture and Olympics, said:

"I am very pleased about the continuing success of the Greenwich Heritage Centre. Since its opening in 2004, the centre has proved to be a great asset to the borough and I would like to congratulate everyone connected with the centre for all their hard work."
