Greenwich has been rated among the highest in the country for compliance with gas safety checks, following a recent spree of inspections on Council properties.
We are now one of a few boroughs in the country to have 100 per cent of properties fully compliant with industry inspection requirements.
More than 22,000 properties were visited to make this year’s safety regulations deadline on 31 March. This also included 130 properties whose tenants were taken to court for failing to arrange access to their homes for an inspection.
Gas inspections are essential
Councillor Maureen O'Mara, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, said:
"Gas inspections are not optional - they are absolutely essential. Both the Council and tenants have a responsibility to make sure they are done. In fact, tenants are in breach of their tenancy agreement if they don’t let us in and could be charged for any action we take against them to force entry.
"Completing more than 22,000 inspections ahead of deadline is a fantastic achievement, but we start all over again now for 2008-9. We fully intend to meet the 100 per cent mark once again, and will continue to do whatever it takes to achieve this."
