Building a brighter future

Women from across the borough were invited to a free Women in Construction Open Day to look at opportunities for work in the building trades on Monday 7 April.

Advisors from Greenwich Local Labour and Business (GLLaB) were recruiting for two free training courses designed to get more women into the construction industry.

The training on offer included:

  •  a City and Guilds Multi Skills programme which involves hands-on training in electrics, plastering, tiling, plumbing and carpentry.

The three and- a-half week course, at a Charlton training centre, runs from 9.30am - 2.30pm, five days a week, starting on April 21.

  • A Construction Retail Programme, which prepares women for customer service roles in builders’ merchants.

The four-week course, starting on 28 April - focuses on building products, customer care and health and safety. It involves two weeks in-house training followed by a two-week placement and the guarantee of a job interview.
GLLaB will provide all protective equipment and both courses include an accredited Construction Skills CSCS card – a nationally recognised construction industry qualification.

Applicants can claim back their travel costs and childcare can also be arranged if needed. Applicants must be unemployed and living in Greenwich.

Filling the skills gap

Councillor Denise Hyland, Cabinet Member for Economy and Skills, said:

"In light of the 2012 Games, the development of Woolwich Town Centre, the Royal Arsenal and the Greenwich Peninsula, Greenwich is seeing unprecedented levels of regeneration across the borough.

"There is a shortage of trained construction workers and it is an area where women are underrepresented but these courses can help to fill the skills gap and encourage women to consider an additional option for work."
