Winners: Lesley and Keith Tuckley from The Earl of Chatham pub
The winners of a new award scheme to encourage high standards of management in local pubs, clubs and restaurants have been announced.
The 'Best Bar None' awards scheme aims to establish a standard of excellence, above the legal minimum, within the licensed trade in the borough.
It offers licensees the chance to prove that they run safe, well-managed premises with a high standard of professional customer care.
The scheme has been put together by the Council and the Police, and is being piloted this year in Woolwich. It has been introduced to give a boost to the licensed trade and reduce alcohol related crime and disorder.
Winners
The winners in the first set of awards were:
- The Earl of Chatham pub in Thomas Street
- Rileys American Pool and Snooker Club in Hare Street
- The Great Harry in Wellington Street.
The three award-winners can now display the Best Bar None logo and their names will be featured on posters in the town centre in the run-up to Christmas.
Maintaining standards
Lesley Tuckley, who has been running the Earl of Chatham with husband, Keith, for the past 23 years, said:
"The awards have been designed to let regulars and newcomers know that there are places to go that offer top-class standards, run by people who are always looking out for them. The safety and enjoyment of our guests is paramount to all of us."
Creating a safer environment
The Woolwich pilot of the Best Bar None scheme is part of a wider strategy to make Woolwich a safer and more attractive environment in which to live, work and socialise. The scheme is due to be extended to other parts of the borough in 2008.
