Positive: Cllr Chris Roberts
The Leader of the Council, Chris Roberts, has spoken of his delight at indications that there may be light at the end of the tunnel for the Woolwich Crossrail campaign.
Prospects for a Crossrail station at Woolwich are starting to look positive again, and Councillor Roberts was quick to thank all the local people and businesses that have joined the campaign.
Following a Greenwich Council online poll which shows overwhelming support for Crossrail, Councillor Roberts said:
"The trick now is to keep our eyes on the ball and make sure that the bid remains steady right up to the decision made by the Department for Transport.
"That includes not taking anything for granted and to lobby for Woolwich with the same commitment and determination that's been demonstrated by campaigners up to now.
"Talks with Berkeley Homes, builders at the Royal Arsenal, are ongoing and I can't go into further details at the moment, except to say that a range of options are being considered in support of the Crossrail campaign for Woolwich.
"The regeneration of the area is already taking place in front of our eyes. The tunnel-boring machine for the Docklands Light Railway's station at Woolwich has made space for the first tunnel - and outline permission for the massive Love Lane redevelopment was granted just last month."
He pointed out: "Crossrail would be the cherry on the cake. In years to come we could be:
- Seven minutes from Canary Wharf
- 15 minutes from the City
- 25 minutes from the West End
- 45 minutes from Heathrow.
"These levels of regeneration will transform Woolwich and be of incredible value to the borough as a whole with the benefits enjoyed by generations to come. So let's keep on to the end of the track for Crossrail."
