Twenty-eight of the borough's finest young athletes were commended at a Spirit of the Games award ceremony last week.
What is Spirit of the Games?
The award ceremony is an annual event. It recognises the outstanding contribution of individuals that represented Greenwich at the London Youth Games in July.
Each athlete receiving an award was selected by their sports team manager as the person they felt showed the most commitment, dedication and fair play while representing the borough at the Games.
The London Youth Games is for people between the ages of 11-18 who reside or go to school in the borough.
Award ceremony
The Mayor of Greenwich, Councillor Harpinder Singh and Charlton Athletic stars Osei Sankofa and Lloyd Sam were among the special guests at the award ceremony at the Town Hall. They helped congratulate the youngsters before presenting them with their medals.
Weightlifting star
A special mention was reserved for Jason Pippin, a student at Woolwich Polytechnic Secondary school, who competed in the Weightlifting event.
His excellent performance at the London Youth Games earned him qualification for the British Under 18 Weightlifting Championship where he swept all before him to become the British Under 18 Weightlifting Champion, defeating opponents up to two years older than him.
His achievement was all the more impressive when you consider he only began lifting weights six months earlier.
