Games 'will tackle unemployment'

There was positive news for Greenwich and the other Olympic host boroughs last week. A report by the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Mayor of London explains how the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be used to achieve a permanent reduction in the level of unemployment across the city.
Council Leader, Chris Roberts was present at the Downing Street launch of the London 2012 Employment and Skills Task Force (LEST) report.

Potential for new investment and new jobs

Speaking on behalf of the five host boroughs, Cllr Roberts said: "The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games present a unique opportunity to boost the economy of London.

"The Games have the potential to bring new investment, new jobs and a new future to East London. The report demonstrates the widespread commitment to making this a reality and recognises that the full potential of the Games will only be achieved through concerted action by both the public and private sectors.

"The focus of the LEST report is employment and skills. But there is also an important challenge in capturing the benefits for London businesses and specifically East London businesses. The five host-boroughs working with local businesses, have recently submitted a bid to the Government Office for London for £21 million funding over three years from the Local Enterprise Growth Initiative. This funding will go a long way to ensure that local businesses can compete for contracts associated with the construction and staging of the Games. Their success will be crucial in generating new jobs."

Getting the best for local people

The five host boroughs for the 2012 games are:

  • Greenwich
  • Hackney
  • Newham
  • Tower Hamlets
  • Waltham Forest.
We are working together to make sure that local residents and businesses get the best possible chance to compete for the employment, training and business opportunities created by the 2012 London Games.

Local labour and business scheme

A local labour and business scheme is being developed that will allow residents and businesses in the five boroughs to register for work on Olympic projects.

The project will be officially launched next month. It will link together the established local labour and business initiatives in the five boroughs to enable them to share existing opportunities for residents and businesses, as well as those that arise from the Games.
