Congratulations to fifteen local refuse collectors who recently completed their NVQ (Level 2) in Waste Management Operations.

The is the first time frontline waste and recycling staff at Greenwich have worked for this qualification.

What did they have to do?

To pass their NVQs, each of the students had to put together a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of working in the waste industry.

As well as carrying out their day-to-day jobs, all of the successful candidates were shadowed by an assessor. They completed a total of ten study units to demonstrate a range of competences, including:

  • contributing to the maintenance of a healthy and safe working environment
  • developing and maintaining effective working relationships
  • controlling the removal of waste
  • contributing to the protection of the environment.
All 15 operatives have been supported throughout the process by their supervisors and colleagues.

A further 23 frontline staff have now committed to the NVQ. They will begin their work towards the qualification in January 2007.

Result of hard work and effort

Awarding the successful candidates with their certificates, Cllr Rajwant Sidhu, Cabinet Member for Greener Greenwich, said:

"I am extremely proud of the commitment and enthusiasm shown by the team who have successfully completed their NVQs.

"Their achievements are the result of a considerable amount of hard work and effort, in addition to their day jobs.

"We’ve made waste and recycling collections as simple as possible for our residents, but there’s more to it for our team of over 100 operatives who make over 140,000 collections each week.

"They play a key role in ensuring that waste is collected in line with government regulations, that it’s collected and recycled safely and that Greenwich residents receive a reliable waste collection service. I am delighted that this expertise has been recognised in a formal qualification for our most dedicated staff."
