Home meals service

Finding it difficult to do your weekly shopping or prepare your own meals? We are celebrating National Meals on Wheels Week 2006 by promoting the benefits of the Council's Home Meals Service.

What is the Home Meals Service?

The scheme is part of Greenwich’s healthy eating campaign. It means that elderly or housebound people can get a delicious, nutritious hot meal each day without having to venture out.

What is on offer?

There are 48 different main courses and 25 puddings available. There are a range of different options from vegetarian to gluten- free meals.

If you join the Home Meals scheme, you will be given a full-colour guide that gives you details of the menu. Nutritional details are included alongside each meal and dessert

You can also get a freezer and microwave if you don’t already own them. The appliances will be serviced annually.

Arrangements can also be made for someone to come and cook your meal for you if you are unable to do it yourself. They’ll even make you a cuppa if required!

What does it cost and when does it arrive?

A two-course meal costs £3.10.

You will receive your seven daily meals in one go on an agreed day of the week. This means you can work out your own dinner schedule.

If you have a hospital appointment or a special trip planned, you can always ring the office in advance and change the delivery arrangements.

How do I sign up?

The Home Meals service is principally for people who have been referred through Greenwich Council’s Adult and Older People’s Services. Contact us using the details on the right for more information.

Healthy eating revolution

Councillor David Grant, Cabinet member for health, adults and older people, said, "Our Home Meals service is becoming increasingly popular with users and more and more people are joining the service.

"It offers elderly people who are housebound, or have difficulty getting to the shops regularly, a helping hand towards having a delicious nutritional meal each day.

"It’s all part of the healthy eating revolution taking place in Greenwich and shows that it’s never too late or early to adopt a healthy diet."
