During a clear-up campaign this month, 41 untaxed and unlicensed cars were removed from the streets of Greenwich.
The two-day operation covered Woolwich Dockyard, Maryon Road, Woolwich Common and the Connaught Estates. It resulted in 39 vehicles being crushed and a further two impounded by the DVLA. Penalties were sent to the vehicle owners.
Keeping our streets clean and safe
This is the latest move in our borough-wide campaign to keep our streets clean and safe, and to ensure that the local environment is properly protected.
The enforcement operations also resulted in an abandoned caravan, suspected of being used by drug users, being removed from Woolwich Town Centre. In addition, a vehicle that had been reported as stolen was recovered from the Woolwich Dockyard Estate.
A serious case of vehicle and parking permit fraud is currently being investigated.
Nuisance vehicles 'are a hazard and an eyesore'
Councillor Maureen O’Mara, Cabinet Member for Environment and Community Safety, said:
"Nuisance vehicles are a major blight for communities across the borough. As well as causing an eyesore, they are a hazard and foster the fear of crime. People often don’t realise that by leaving an unlicensed or untaxed vehicle, whether on a public highway or housing estate, they are committing a serious crime.
"We will continue to work in partnership with the police and other agencies to carry out regular enforcement operations to clamp down on those who flout the law in this way."
