A partner has now been appointed to work with the Council on our multi-million pound Building Schools for the Future programme.
VT Education and Skills (VTES) will be working as our Strategic Partner Organisation as we take forward plans to transform every secondary school in the borough through new buildings and improved facilities.
Transforming schools
Five schools will be transformed in the first wave of the programme. The following three will be completely rebuilt:
- Crown Woods in Eltham
- The John Roan in East Greenwich
- Thomas Tallis School in Kidbrooke Park Road.
A further two will be refurbished and extended:
- Eltham Hill
- Plumstead Manor.
Consultation open days
Architects have been working with schools to draw up outline designs and plans.
Schools will be working with local communities over the coming months to get their feedback on the designs before they are put forward for planning approval.
Open days and evenings will be held at each school at the start of next year. They will give staff, parents, students and local residents the opportunity to find out more about the plans. Dates are:
- Thomas Tallis School: 4 January, 4pm to 6pm; 9 January, 6pm to 8pm
- Crown Woods School: 15 January, 4pm to 6pm; 22 January, 6pm to 8pm
- Plumstead Manor School: 11 January, 4pm to 6pm; 17 January, 6pm to 8pm
- The John Roan: to be confirmed.
When will the work be finished?
The newly built and refurbished schools are due to open in September 2009.
Other secondary schools will be worked on during future waves of the programme. Ultimately, each secondary school in Greenwich will benefit.
How pupils will benefit
The Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme in Greenwich represents the single biggest investment ever made in the borough’s schools.
It will enable schools to offer an extended, flexible curriculum that meets the needs of each individual student. This will offer pupils a wider range of options in their education, including more choice over the type of school they wish to attend.
The new schools will also provide new facilities for use by the wider community both during and beyond the school day.

Building 'quality environments'
Cllr Chris Roberts, Leader of Greenwich Council, said:
"BSF gives us the opportunity to provide the best services for children and their families, delivered in the best quality environments. Standards in our schools are steadily improving and we need buildings and facilities which reflect this.
"Greenwich has high expectations from our strategic partner and we were looking for an organisation that demonstrated a real commitment to giving our children first-class schools.
"We are confident that VTES share the aspirations we have for future generations of our students and are looking forward to a successful long-term partnership."
