Residents updated on Eltham Centre construction

Over 150 local residents got an update on the development of the Eltham Centre at a recent drop in evening at St. Mary’s Community Centre.
Council staff and representatives from Willmott Dixon, the construction company building the centre, were on hand to listen to people’s views and answer questions.

Local people also had an opportunity to look at the plans for the Centre and get a feel for how it will look when work is complete.

New facilities

Building work at the Centre is now underway and it is due to open in Autumn 2007.

It will be the first of three local service centres in the borough and will provide:

  • three new pools
  • an enhanced public library
  • a new branch of Greenwich Community College
  • access to a range of Council services
  • a café
  • gym
  • community spaces
  • crèche.

Business as usual

During the building process Eltham Pools and Elm Terrace Health and Fitness Centre will continue to operate as usual.

Eltham Library will continue to operate as usual this year, then an interim library service will be established next year so that the library refurbishment works can be completed.

Further developments

Elsewhere in the borough, early consultation is taking place to develop two similar service centres at Woolwich and Greenwich.

They form part of the Council’s modernisation that includes investment in schools and early years education, housing, transport and regeneration.
