John Roan school gets award

The John Roan School in Blackheath, has set the standard for schools across the country by receiving a national commendation for its work related learning programme (WRL).

Going for gold

The school achieved a Silver distinction in the Work Related Learning Quality Assurance Award, making it the first school in Greenwich to receive such an accolade for WRL. It is now in hot pursuit of the Gold award, which is only achievable once the Silver award has been received.

Getting ready for work

With the main aim of properly preparing students for the world of work, The John Roan have found WRL so valuable to students that the programme has become an essential part of the school’s curriculum for Key stages 4 & 5.

Clear commitment

Educational consultants Jim Forrest and Richard Gretton assessed the school. Jim Forrest, said:

"The John Roan School has a clear commitment to the development and implementation of work related learning programmes for all students."

Essential part of the curriculum

Paul Burnett, Greenwich Council’s Director of Children’s Services, added,

"Work related learning programmes have become an essential part of the Greenwich school curriculum for many reasons. They not only broaden the career aspirations of students, but also help to show them the relevance of what they learn at school and how this applies to the world of work.

"The John Roan have made a huge achievement by receiving this award and it’s great to see their hard work being nationally recognised."
