Three estates consultation under way

Residents from three Woolwich estates have been meeting with the Council to have their say on the future of their homes.

The estates involved are:

  • Connaught
  • Maryon Road
  • Grove and Morris Walk.
The Council has proposed a plan to demolish 1064 homes and build new homes to replace them.

This is part of the £220 million investment programme to bring council housing up to the Decent Homes standard by 2010.

A final decision will be taken in the autumn once residents have had their say.

What will happen to the people that live there?

If the plans go ahead, tenants will move out while work is under way. They will be able to choose whether they want to go back to the estates later or if they want to live somewhere else.

Leaseholders will be given the market value of their homes plus an extra 10%. Any leaseholders who want to return to the estate but can’t afford to will have an opportunity to become a shared owner.

In the autumn the residents will be asked to complete a survey to help us assess their needs.

What happened at the meetings?

The meetings took place at Charlton Community Centre and St Peter’s Church Hall on 11 and 13 July.

Over 200 came along and were able to ask questions, put forward their ideas and meet councillors and officers.

They were given a special newsletter detailing the proposals and answering questions.

Changing Woolwich for the next generation

Councillor Peter Kotz, Cabinet member for Housing and Neighbourhood Renewal, told residents: "This is an opportunity to change Woolwich for the generation to come. We are beginning on a journey. We want to do it with you."

He added: "Our proposals tie into our wider regeneration plans for Woolwich which are bringing new developments to the town centre. We want to ensure that local people are the first to benefit from these changes which is why are looking to improve homes and estates."
