The Queen flies into Greenwich

The Queen made a flying visit to Greenwich last week. She joined the Mayor and guests who were celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Marine Society & Sea Cadets.
Her Majesty and the Mayor, Councillor Harpinder Singh, spent the morning on board the HMS Albion. The Queen made a spectacular entrance by arriving on the ship by helicopter.

What happened?

Highlights of the morning included:

  • a Sea Cadet band performance
  • a Sea Cadet ladder display
  • a tour of the ship
  • a chance to meet members of the ship’s company.
The visit ended with a reception on the vehicle deck in the depths of the vessel.

Longest running maritime charity

The Marine Society was founded in 1756 and merged with the Sea Cadet Association in 2004.

The 250th anniversary milestone, makes The Marine Society and Sea Cadets the UK’s longest running maritime charity.

Great pleasure

The Mayor of Greenwich Councillor Harpinder Singh, said: "It was a great pleasure to be among guests which included the Queen, and help The Marine Society and Sea Cadets celebrate such an impressive achievement.

"It was a wonderful morning and I am extremely happy that the HMS Albion anchored off in Greenwich, a place renowned for its own impressive historical heritage."
